Minimally Invasive Bunion Surgery

Permanent bunion correction with keyhole surgery. Minimal pain, smaller scars, faster recovery.

Bunion Surgery: A Modern Solution

If conservative treatment hasn't resolved your bunion pain and the deformity continues affecting your quality of life, minimally invasive bunion surgery offers a permanent solution. Unlike traditional open surgery, keyhole bunion surgery corrects the deformity through tiny incisions—just 3-4mm—using specialized instruments and real-time X-ray guidance.

The result? Permanent bunion correction with significantly less post-operative pain, faster healing, smaller scars, and the ability to weight-bear immediately. Most patients return to normal activities within 6-8 weeks and can resume high heels and sports after full healing.

Mr Kaser Nazir carries out all our bunion surgeries using minimally invasive keyhole techniques. He is one of the leading minimally invasive bunion surgeons in the United Kingdom with extensive experience in this advanced surgical approach.

What is Keyhole Bunion Surgery?

Keyhole bunion surgery (also called minimally invasive bunion surgery) is a modern surgical technique that permanently corrects bunion deformities without large incisions. Instead of exposing the entire foot, the surgeon makes tiny incisions (just 3-4mm) and uses specialized instruments to reshape the bone.

The Procedure

A small incision is made on the inside of your foot. Through this tiny opening, specialized instruments cut the metatarsal bone involved in the bunion deformity. The bone is then repositioned to realign the big toe, and held in place with small specialized screws. The entire procedure is guided by real-time X-ray imaging to ensure precise alignment.

Why It's Different

  • Minimal soft tissue disruption due to tiny incisions
  • No large wound healing complications
  • Significantly reduced pain post-operatively
  • Immediate weight bearing possible
  • Faster return to normal activities
  • Minimal scarring

Before and after bunion surgery results showing permanent correction and improved foot appearance

Permanent bunion correction with keyhole surgery delivers visible results. This patient shows the dramatic improvement possible with minimally invasive techniques—permanent straightening of the big toe and elimination of the bony bump.

Why Choose Keyhole Bunion Surgery?

Minimal Pain

Significantly less post-operative pain than traditional bunion surgery. Most patients manage with simple pain relief for just 2-3 days.

Small Incisions

Tiny 3-4mm incisions mean minimal scarring and faster wound healing compared to large open procedures.

Faster Recovery

Weight-bear immediately and return to light activities within 2 weeks. Most patients resume normal activities by 6-8 weeks.

Reduced Complications

Fewer wound problems and lower joint stiffness risk due to minimal tissue disruption and early mobilization.

Better Results

Can correct larger bunions more completely without fusion procedures. Outcomes superior to traditional techniques.

No Hospital Stay

Performed under sedation as a day procedure. No overnight hospital admission required in most cases.

Are You a Suitable Candidate?

Keyhole bunion surgery can correct most bunion deformities, whether small or large. However, certain factors determine suitability:

Good Candidates

  • ✓ Painful bunions that conservative treatment hasn't resolved
  • ✓ Visible deformity affecting shoe fit and comfort
  • ✓ Good bone quality without osteoporosis
  • ✓ No significant arthritis in the big toe joint
  • ✓ Realistic expectations about results and recovery

Considerations

  • • Severe osteoporosis may require a different surgical approach
  • • Significant arthritis in the big toe joint may suggest fusion surgery instead
  • • Active smoking can slow healing (though not a contraindication)
  • • Certain medical conditions may affect surgical timing

Mr Nazir will assess your specific situation during a consultation to determine if keyhole surgery is right for you, or if an alternative approach would be better suited to your particular bunion.

Recovery Timeline

First 3 Days

Rest and elevate your foot as much as possible. Minimal pain management needed. Keep the incision dry and covered. Wear the post-operative shoe provided.

Days 3-14

Begin gentle mobilization for 10 minutes per hour using crutches and post-operative shoe. Continue rest and elevation between activity. Sutures removed around day 10-14 if non-absorbable sutures were used.

Weeks 2-4

Progress to comfortable sandals or rigid sole trainers. Gradually increase walking distance. Light activities can resume. Swelling is normal and peaks around week 2.

Weeks 4-8

Return to most normal shoes. Continue gradual activity increase. Most people return to work and normal activities by this time. Swelling gradually decreases.

3-4 Months

Full healing complete. Return to high heels, sports, and impact activities can resume. Residual swelling may persist for up to 6 months in some cases.

Note: Physiotherapy is typically not required post-operatively due to early mobilization. Your foot naturally returns to function as pain decreases. Individual recovery varies based on the extent of deformity correction needed.
