Ankle Instability Treatment

How do we treat ankle instability?

When your ankle is injured, rehabilitation is crucial and starts the moment your treatment begins. Your specialist may recommend one or more of the following treatment options for ankle instability:

  • Rest
  • Ice
  • Compression
  • Elevation
  • Physiotherapy/ strengthening exercises
  • Pain and anti-inflammatory medication
  • Surgery

Ligament tightening procedure/brostrum-gould repair:

The damaged and stretched ligaments are repaired and stitched back on themselves to restore them to their normal strength and thickness. Key Hole ankle surgery may also be performed to assess or treat damage caused by chronic ankle instability.

Recovery after ankle instability surgery:

Post operatively, you will be able to put weight on the foot almost immediately. You will be given a splint (aircast boot) to wear for three weeks, during which time you will be having physiotherapy twice a week. You should expect full recovery about 6-8 weeks after your surgery.
