Sesamoid Treatment
How do we treat sesamoid problems?
Sesamoid treatment would usually always involve a period of immobilisation and activity modification. Occasionally a simply change of trainers with extra cushioning can help.
X-rays and MRI are often used to diagnose the underlying pathology of sesamoid problems.
Sesamoid treatment can involve:
- Off-loading in specialist boot
- Orthotics
- Injections to reduce inflammation and pain
- Surgery to remove sesamoid bone/s (sesamoidectomy)
Prevention of sesamoid problems:
Wearing comfortable and cushioning footwear can help to prevent sesamoid problems. Supportive insoles, shock absorbing shows and padding can also add additional support to reduce the pressure on the sesamoid bones.
